Helena was born on 21 September 1866, the youngest of four children, to parents Joseph Wells and Sarah Neal. Helena had two older brothers and one older sister. She was a strong-willed girl from the moment she was born. Helena was also very much her father's daughter as far as her interests and intellect went. Her personality, however, came directly from her mother, which was probably part of the reason they were always at odds.

Helena was raised as all girls in the Victorian era were, to one day be the perfect wife. Though from a young age, Helena knew this wasn't the kind of life she wanted. When she was seven years old, she had an accident while horseback riding. More that her brother Charles decided scaring her horse would be a wonderful idea, thus the horse reared and threw Helena, resulting in her breaking her leg. It was this incident that ignited her love of literature. Her father gave her books to read while she was unable to do much. And she also began to write. Also from a young age, she showed a great propensity for science and mathematics, two things women were not supposed to learn in-depth. However, Helena's father snuck her books on the subjects behind her mother's back, and she sometimes took her brothers' textbooks to teach herself about these topics.

Writing and inventing came naturally to her. And she taught herself everything she wanted to know, much to her mother's ire. Oh Helena still learned the "proper" things for women to know, such as sewing and playing an instrument. Indeed, Helena was actually quite proficient at playing the piano, though she pretended to loathe the instrument. As she came into puberty and discovered her sexuality, Helena realized she was attracted to both men and women. And having a huge rebellious streak in her, Helena went against social customs and lost her virginity at the age of fifteen. She was pregnant at sixteen, which threw her mother up in arms. If it hadn't been for her father putting his foot down, Helena's mother would've forced her into a marriage to try and save the family's face. The marriage was not to be, but Helena was still confined to the house for the duration of her pregnancy. After a long and arduous labor, Helena gave birth to a daughter whom she named Christina.

Helena took instantly and well to motherhood. She doted on Christina and loved her with every fiber of her being. And life went on, Helena having taken other lovers along the way, both men and women. Many of her male lovers were scientists or authors, and she even engaged in scientific projects with some of her lovers. She also was writing fiction stories. Though given she was a woman, her brother, Charles, would take the stories, saying he'd publish them under her name, edit the stories to his liking and then go to publishers with them. Finally, in 1887, Helena's first stories were published. As of 1888, she had five stories published, which she was proud of to an extent. She resented that her brother got the accolades for them, but at least the works were published under her initials and not his. But it was at this point in 1888, after her fifth story was published, that one Helena Wells suddenly disappeared from her world and found herself in a new world...without her memory.

In this new world, she was given the name Victoria Turner.
